Maternity Education and Parenting Classes

The safety of our patients and staff is our highest priority. Given the current situation with Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), we are cancelling all non-essential events, including our Cardiac Rehabilitation, Maternity Education and Hip / Knee Education Classes. See further details below:


Maternity (Antenatal and Postnatal Education):

  • All antenatal classes have been cancelled until further notice. Please call 08 8375 5218 or email for access to our new maternity educational videos.
  • Postnatal Lactation and Newborn support will continue but will be provided by appointment only and all attendees will be required to complete COVID-19 screening on arrival.
  • Parents and Babies Information Sessions have been cancelled until further notice.

Ashford Hospital offers education programs to assist you during the pregnancy, birth and aftercare of your baby. All sessions are held at Ashford Hospital.

Antenatal Education

This class has been cancelled until further notice.

Designed to be taken at around 20 weeks, Health During Pregnancy is an informative session providing the latest evidence based information on healthy eating and physical wellbeing during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

This class will provide you with practical advice and provide an opportunity for you to ask questions in a relaxed environment with other expecting parents.

This class is now available to view online. Please contact our maternity staff on 8375 5218 for access.

Program 2 will provide you with an overview of what to expect during labour, birth and your hospital stay. It will also provide you with some tips for the aftercare of your baby.

It is recommended this program be completed between 28 and 32 weeks gestation. This session can be attended as one full day Saturday seminar, 9.00am until 4.00pm.

Program 2 includes:

  • Active labour and birth
  • Pain relief options
  • Feeding options
  • Routine screening tests performed while in hospital
  • The role of the support person
  • Caesarean birth
  • Basic baby needs

This two hour program specifically covers topics that will support successful breastfeeding.

It is recommended expectant mothers attend this program between 36 and 38 weeks gestation.

This program will address:

  • Positioning
  • Attachment
  • Parental adjustment

Please note that only our expectant mothers are invited to attend this session.

Join other “Dads to be” to discuss early parenting, the role of fathers and what to expect with your newborn baby. This is a two hour session to be undertaken when your partner is around 32 to 37 weeks gestation.

Topics include:

  • Benefits of being an involved father
  • Child development
  • Breastfeeding information
  • Settling techniques
  • Infant behaviours
  • Signs of illness

First time fathers may feel nervous but a little planning goes a long way into preparing you for this amazing role. There is a $30.00 fee per Dad, fees are payable on the day. Please present to the reception desk located at the hospital main entrance.

Postnatal Education and Support

We understand that there are many things you need to learn about your new baby and the Midwives at Ashford Hospital are here to help you. Our Midwives advocate breastfeeding. If you choose to breastfeed we have dedicated Lactation Consultants available to support the establishment of breastfeeding.

Our Newborn Support service is also available for you when you leave hospital. This service is available:

  • Tuesdays by appointment between 9.00am and 3.30pm (30min appointments)
  • Thursdays by appointment between 9.00am and 3.30pm (30min appointments)
  • Fridays you can "drop in" between 11.00am and 2.00pm Currently not available
  • Appointments can be via telephone if unable to come into hospital
