Maternity Education and Parenting Classes

Ashford Hospital offers education programs to assist you during the pregnancy, birth and aftercare of your baby. All sessions are held at Ashford Hospital.

Antenatal Education

This class is available to view online as well as at the hospital. We encourage you to watch the video prior to coming in for your booked education session. Click here to view the online class.

Program 1 will provide you with an overview of what to expect during labour, birth and your hospital stay. It will also provide you with some tips for the aftercare of your baby.

It is recommended this program be completed between 28 and 32 weeks gestation. This session is done during Saturday either between 9:30am-11:30am or 12:30pm -2:30pm. Please note, there will be a maximum of 20 people per class (10 couples).


Program 1 includes:

  • Active labour and birth
  • Pain relief options
  • Feeding options
  • Routine screening tests performed while in hospital
  • The role of the support person
  • Caesarean birth
  • Basic baby needs

This one hour program specifically covers topics that will support successful breastfeeding.

It is recommended expectant mothers attend this program between 36 and 38 weeks gestation.

This program will address:

  • Positioning
  • Attachment
  • Parental adjustment

Please note that only our expectant mothers are invited to attend this session.

Join other “Dads to be” to discuss early parenting, the role of fathers and what to expect with your newborn baby. This is a two hour session to be undertaken when your partner is around 32 to 37 weeks gestation.

Tops include:

  • Benefits of being an involved father
  • Child development
  • Breastfeeding information
  • Settling techniques
  • Infant behaviors
  • Sings of illness

First time fathers may feel nervous but a little planning goes a long way into preparing you for this amazing role. There is a $30.00 fee per Dad, fees are payable on the day. Please present to the reception desk located at the hospital main entrance.

Postnatal Education and Support

We understand that there are many things you need to learn about your new baby and the Midwives at Ashford Hospital are here to help you. Our Newborn Support service is also available for you when you leave hospital. This service is available:

  • Tuesdays by appointment between 8.00am and 4.00pm
  • Thursdays by appointment between 11.00am and 4.00pm
  • Appointments can be via telephone
