Maternity Education and Parenting Classes
Ashford Hospital offers education programs to assist you during the pregnancy, birth and aftercare of your baby. All sessions are held at Ashford Hospital.

Program 1 is designed to assist you to achieve optimal health during your pregnancy. This seminar is held on Saturday mornings 9.00am to 12.00pm.
It is recommended this program be attended between 12 and 20 weeks gestation. A Physiotherapist, Dietitian and Midwife present this three hour seminar, addressing:
- Back care, pelvic floor awareness and general fitness
- Parental adjustment, introduction to breastfeeding, baby equipment and safety guidelines
- Maintaining good nutrition to support optimal health
Program 2 will provide you with an overview of what to expect during labour, birth and your hospital stay. It will also provide you with some tips for the aftercare of your baby.
It is recommended this program be completed between 28 and 32 weeks gestation. The sessions can be attended as one full day seminar, or over two separate evening sessions.
Program 2 includes:
- Active labour and birth
- Pain relief options
- Feeding options
- Routine screening tests performed while in hospital
- The role of the support person
- Caesarean birth
- Basic baby needs
- One full day Saturday: 9.00am to 4.00pm OR
- Two evening sessions: 7.00pm to 9.30pm
This two hour program specifically covers topics that will support successful breastfeeding.
It is recommended expectant mothers attend this program between 36 and 38 weeks gestation.
This program will address:
- Parental adjustment
Please note that only our expectant mothers are invited to attend this session.
Join other “Dads to be” to discuss early parenting, the role of fathers and what to expect with your newborn baby. This is a two hour session to be undertaken when your partner is around 32 to 37 weeks gestation.

- Signs of illness
First time fathers may feel nervous but a little planning goes a long way into preparing you for this amazing role. There is a $30.00 fee per Dad, fees are payable on the day. Please present to the reception desk located at the hospital main entrance.

Postnatal Education and Support
We understand that there are many things you need to learn about your new baby and the Midwives at Ashford Hospital are here to help you. Our Midwives advocate breastfeeding. If you choose to breastfeed we have dedicated Lactation Consultants available to support the establishment of breastfeeding.
Our Newborn Support service is also available for you when you leave hospital. This service is available:
- Tuesdays by appointment
- Fridays you can “drop in” between 10.00am and 2.00pm

We encourage new parents and their babies to attend our regular information sessions.
These sessions are hosted by a Midwife and include guest speakers covering a range of interesting topics. The sessions are a great opportunity to build relationships and have questions answered in a relaxed environment.
The sessions are held on Wednesdays between 10.30am and 12.30pm at Ashford Hospital. Morning Tea is provided and bookings are not required.
